Event Details
When you listen to Over the Rhine, the supremely talented musical couple comprised of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler, you quickly fall under the spell of Karin’s timeless voice “which has the power to stop the world in its tracks” (Performing Songwriter). And then the songs and the words start hitting you.
Paste magazine writes, “Over the Rhine creates true confessional masterpieces that know neither border nor boundary” and included Bergquist and Detweiler in their list of 100 Best Living Songwriters. Rolling Stone writes, Over the Rhine is a band “with no sign of fatigue, whose moment has finally arrived.”
That’s quite a sentiment for a band celebrating 30+ years of writing, recording, and life on the road. But as Karin Bergquist states, “There is still so much music left to be made.”
With their Ohio roots only deepening, Linford and Karin — with the help of the community that has coalesced around their music — have restored a 150-year-old barn, transforming it into a fully functioning music and arts venue on their 23-acre farm outside of Cincinnati.
For the last ten years, Over the Rhine has curated and hosted Nowhere Else Festival, a music and arts festival that also takes place on their Ohio farm, and which has included performances by The Blind Boys of Alabama, Patty Griffin, Allison Russell, Joe Henry, Iris Dement, John Paul White and Amy Helm among many others.
Linford and Karin are also seasoned songwriting workshop leaders, and have hosted hundreds of songwriters from around the country for deep dives into the mystery of the craft.
Over the Rhine continues to tour nationally and internationally, and has collaborated with quite a number of their musical heroes along the way, opening shows for Bob Dylan early in their career, then touring and recording for several years as honorary members of Cowboy Junkies. They supported Lucinda Williams on a handful of dates after she leant her voice to a duet with Karin on the Over the Rhine album, The Long Surrender.
With over 15 studio albums in their catalog, and over 30 total projects released across the spectrum of their prolific career, Bergquist and Detweiler are still growing and experimenting as writers and performers, and very much “still betting on the muse.” New songs have been arriving and Detweiler recently remarked, “It’s still surprising after all these years to experience how songs can arrive as teachers, or with a certain degree of prescience, sensing what’s ahead, urging us to move with them into places we otherwise wouldn’t have words for.”
“Lean in,” says Bergquist.
Look for a new record from Over the Rhine in 2027.
