For the teen trapped in all of us, Apex Theatre Studio, in partnership with the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, will present The Ultimate 80s Dance Party on Saturday, June 10 from 8:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m at the Concert Hall. The Ultimate 80s Dance Party will also be the kickoff event for Apex’s Summer Theatre Series.
“We were looking for an event that would allow us to throw open the doors of the space and welcome folks in to connect, laugh and groove,” stated Ian Mairs, managing director of Apex Theatre Studio. “At Apex, we are in the business of enabling young artists to hone their craft and express themselves. Dancing allows everyone the opportunity to let loose and play.”
Guests can expect to hear a variety of 1980s pop and soul favorites during the three-hour event which will include a live DJ, some retro-themed dance lessons and a flash mob (or two) that will spark memories of moussed hair, ragged tees (ala Flashdance) and the restless beat of soundtracks from movies such as St. Elmo’s Fire, The Breakfast Club, Say Anything and Sixteen Candles and memorable dance tunes from artists such as Whitney Houston, George Michael, Depeche Mode, Yaz and many more.
“There is a considerable legion of people whose alter ego dwells in John Hughesian existence,” remarked Ryan Murphy, director of the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. “Whether you fancied punk, rap or Madonna, we will cover it musically over the course of the evening with a great deal of fun,” Murphy continued.
Guests are encouraged to don clothes which create the sparkle, grunge and humor of the era. “Torn jeans, fishnets, gloves and denim are all welcome. The fair need to rise and shine,” remarked Amy Wilson, board member for Apex Theatre Studio.
Now in its fourth year, Apex Theatre Studio (a non-profit training center with 501c3 status) fosters young artists who possess a passion and curiosity for acting, singing, dancing and stagecraft through a series of master classes, intensives, readings and theatrical presentations. The Apex Summer Theatre Series, also in its fourth year and to be held at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, will feature the Broadway musical The Secret Garden, a 90-minute version of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It (set in old Ponte Vedra) and the 70s feel good favorite, Godspell.
